You can download a copy of python now and get started immediately, if you want. Realistically, you can probably do most of this in matlab, too, but first thing's first: matlab costs money and python is free. I use it to automate a ton of stuff (bench equipment, plotting data, processing data files, etc.). Python is a good thing to have in your tool belt, period. I don't personally use it a whole lot, but have in the past. We have matlab at work and it's primarily used for simulations (with various toolboxes and simulink).
