![]() It’s smooth – like a cat.įor the first times in her life, Haru is treated like royalty as she is whisked away – quite literally – to the Cat kingdom to marry the Cat prince as a reward for saving his life. The story revolves around an adventure, but as cat’s are involved, the adventure isn’t chaotic or overwhelming. It helped ease the audience into the fairy tale mindset as Haru discovers the magical world of the cat kingdom and dreams of a simpler life. This movie puts a lot of care into matching the tone of story with Haru’s mellow attitude. How nice would it be to not have any obligations? She opens her eyes to the world of a cat’s life and she starts to wonder if such a life would be fitting for her. A small dose of confidence allows her to start daydreaming, especially about cats. He promises that she will be properly thanked soon but he’s too busy to at the present moment. Haru ponders this as she sits in the bushes hyperventilating only to find that the cat she saved thanks her in her own tongue. She runs after the cat and scopes him up with her lacrosse stick and dives away.įor being so ordinary, the audience, as well as Haru are surprised that she was capable of such an admirable feat. One day, she see’s a cat carrying a package in it’s mouth as he crosses the street on a collision course with a large truck. Haru is a young girl who lives a very ordinary life and doesn’t have very many aspirations. Although these themes are common place in literature and the cinema, they were delivered uniquely. It takes turning into a cat for her to realize how blessed she is in the human world. The Cat Returns is an adorable and sweet film about a girl who has to loose herself to find herself. Even without context of it being a Ghibli film I just personally didn't enjoy it.While over at my friend’s house, we decided to watch the one movie her young daughter was obsessed with after an episode of Star Trek. Maybe I owe it a rewatch with more realistic expectations, but for me this is solidly one of my bottom 3 Ghibli films. Plus, knowing it was supposed to be a follow-up to Whisper of the Heart, one of my favorite films, I just think I had too high of expectations for this film. For me I feel like that might have hurt Cat Returns with how good Ghibli films had been prior to my watch of Cat Returns. but it isn't enough for me to enjoy the film on its own.Īs others have pointed out, Ghibli is such a great studio that a mid Ghibli film is still great. So with that in mind, I like that the Cat Returns has flaws in its story and characters. It has issues like any first-time writer would have in their first work. One of my favorite moments of that film is how her story isn't just magically great. Which is great, but I'm just not the target audience & I don't have that nostalgia for it.īecause the story & characters have so many flaws, it actually does tie into the idea that it's the story written in Whisper of the Heart. So many people that I hear talk about this film talk about how they watched it as a kid. I think there are two saving graces for this film: ![]() There was no depth to any of the characters, which was especially sad for the Baron because his backstory from Whisper was actually incredible. But the killer for me was how flat all of the characters felt. The story is generic and predictable and seems to lack some of the deeper motifs & themes that other Ghibli films have. the problem is that nothing else shines either. But that could easily be made up for in other areas. To start with, its animation just isn't to par for Ghibli films. This is probably a bottom 3 Ghibli film for me and one of the few I actually haven't rewatched.
